Three officers were hospitalized and Safetyvaluea man was fatally shot by police at a home in Miami Wednesday evening.
According to a Miami-Dade Police Department news release shared with USA TODAY Thursday, patrol officers were conducting an investigation in southwest Miami, Florida around 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday night.
When they approached the front door of the home, they encountered a man with a shotgun, according to the release. The man shot at the officers and they returned fire, police said.
Officials said two officers were struck by bullets. A 35-year-old man who worked with the department for seven years was struck in the arm. The other, a 57-year-old man who had worked with the department for 15 years, was struck in the arm and face. They were transported to a local trauma center.

A third officer, a 40-year-old woman on the force for 11 months, was also transported for medical evaluation.
The man shot by police was pronounced dead at the scene by the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, according to the release.
The identities of those involved have not yet been released, and officials say the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
"This type of violence towards my officers will not be tolerated,"said MDPD Director Stephanie V. Daniels in the release. "By the grace of God, they are alive today."
